Time for a Cup of Christmas Tea....

Welcome back to another post from Tea With Me and Friends - I'm sorry that we've been a little slow to post articles this month, time is escaping us at the moment....we're really pleased that the Christmas break is just around the corner!

Today I wanted to share with you a festive cup of tea that was given to me by the lovely Claire from The Secret Tea Society. If you haven't heard about the Society before, we are a bunch of tea loving ladies who meet up to enjoy a spot of afternoon tea and a good natter. The tea that Claire gave me was a little Christmas gift....

Kent & Sussex Christmas Tea

Now as regularly readers will know, we love trying new teas here at Tea With Me and Friends and we're also a rather festive bunch....so we could wait to try this tea! I took a peek at the Kent & Sussex Tea & Coffee Company to find out a little more about this festive blend. The words "exotic Fruit Tisane" feature, as do "wonderful aroma with a powerful spicy taste". It certainly smelt wonderful when we first opened the bag.....like Christmas had been trapped in that bag!

the instructions suggests leaving this blend to brew for 10-12 minutes, but to be honest we poured a little sooner than that....

The result was a beautiful red tea, which smelt like Christmas and tasted quite wonderful. The flavour is spicy, I could tastes cloves mainly, but it wasn't overpowering or artificial. In fact it made a rather lovely cup of Christmas tea.

I did try it cold as well as hot (but accident) and can confirm that it better enjoyed hot!

Time for a cup of Christmas tea!

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea article from Tea With Me and Friends. Since it's the festive season, I thought I would try a little Christmas tea this time!

A little while ago when I was wandering around a gift shop in Rye, I discovered this particular brand of Christmas inspired tea and was intrigued to try it (yes the fab packaging tempted me!) ....

Now with such claims as it's like “Mulled Wine in a tea cup”....I had to give it a go! Although I have to admit, at this time of year I reach for slightly more festive cups than my usual teacups....

Yes, I do agree that it seems a bit mean to make hot drinks in a cute little snowman like this....but I have to put him to good use! 

So, what makes this a Christmas tea I hear you cry....well the ingredients include... Pure Ceylon Black Tea, Cinnamon, Ginger, Peppermint, Cardamom, Pepper, Vanilla flavour and Chai flavour. Is your mouth watering yet??

Now, I'm not sure if you have heard of Brewhaha, the company responsible for this tea, but you have probably seen their quirky packaging. Brewhaha Tea was launched in 2004 after founder Joanne McLeod was tired of seeing tea marketed in dowdy grey and brown boxes and decided to create a fun loving brand with a retro style.

Brewhaha teas are made using Sri Lankan tea, which is also packaged in Sri Lanka which adds to it's freshness.

Brewhaha have an extensive range of teas on offer through stockists and in their online shop...including teas such as the "Super Happiness Tea" which is a Green Tea with vanilla & cherry marigold, which sounds scrummy! To find out more pop by their website.

Now back to the reason we are here....the Christmas tea....

This brew was actually really refreshing and not at all over powering (which thought it might be). The flavours are balanced well and really remind me of the festive season....a lovely cup of tea.

Looking on the website today, unfortunately all the Christmas tea has already sold...but keep your eyes peeled as you might find it in one of their stockists!

Tried and Tested....Homemade Cold Brewed Tea with a little help from Whittard

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea article from Tea With Me and Friends. Recently I was invited to try out the Cold Brew T Bottle from Whittard which has been designed to make cold brewed loose leaf tea to be enjoyed at home.

Having not tried cold brewed tea before I was rather intrigued by the end results. On reading more about the process I found out that a cold, slow infusion produces a brew with reduced tannins and therefore a smoother, less bitter taste. Perfect for summer picnics, but also enjoyable with meals at anytime during the year as the tea tends to be really refreshing.

The Whittard Cold Brew T Bottle makes the whole process of cold brewing at home incredibly simple, with five simple steps....

1) Add 15g (5-7 teaspoons) of your favourite loose leaf tea to the bottle (fruit and herbal infusions are not suitable for use with cold brew)

2) Fill the bottle to the mark with cold water.

3) Add the lid/spout

4) Let the tea brew in the fridge for 3-6 hours

5) Serve and enjoy 

As well as the bottle Whittard also sent me some Mango & Bergamot loose leaf tea to try as a cold brew. This was a blend that I haven't tried before, but have become a huge fan of. It's a naturally sweet green tea, blended with mango and a hint of bergamot.

I followed the simple instructions above, putting 6 teaspoons of the leaves into my bottle before adding cold water. I then left the bottle in the fridge for about four hours to infuse before trying the brew. There is a clever filter in the lid which allows you to pour directly from the bottle into your teacup of choice.

Not really knowing what to expect from a cold tea brew (and not being a huge fan of iced coffee) I was pleasantly surprised by the end results. The tea was a bright, clear green-yellow colour when poured out of the bottle, and no tea leaves made it into the cup. The flavour of the Mango & Bergamot blend was clear and smooth and very refreshing...definitely something I would drink again.

I am looking forward to trying more tea varieties from my cupboard in the future.

The bottle itself is elegant in design and sits neatly in my fridge. I think this would make a lovely present for the tea-lover in your life who already has lots of tea accessories and is looking for something a little different.

Tried and Tested...Pukka Herbs Uplifting Blends

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea review post from Tea With Me and Friends. Recently we were asked if we would like to try a new range of herbal teas from Pukka Herbs, the organic herb specialists. Having not tried any of the Pukka teas before, we were keen to see what they have to offer.

Pukka was first founded in 2002 by Sebastian Pole and Tim Westwell who have a mutual passion for natural health and wellbeing. Pukka uses only organic herbs in their products, they are certified by the Soil Association as a totally organic business. Their range currently includes 35 herbal, green, fruit and black teas, along with 37 food supplements.

I recently had a homemade afternoon tea at home with a group of friends, which I thought was the perfect opportunity to try out the new uplifting blends from Pukka. The first thing we all commented on was how pretty the packaging is - pretty patterns in bright colours adorn all the boxes, which would look wonderful in any kitchen!

The four uplifting blends we had to try included Wild Apple & Cinnamon with Ginger, Womankind, Detox with Lemon and Chamomile, Vanilla & Manuka Honey.

The first two teas belong to the "Feel Alive" family at Pukka....

Womankind - Pukka herbal tea

Womankind was created by Pukka to help women "balance and bloom", the tea is a blend of cranberry, rose and sweet vanilla - giving a pretty pink brew. The aroma is slightly earthy, with a hint of sweetness. This blend is a caffeine free, everyday tea which has a pleasant taste of rose and cranberry, with a lingering aftertaste of sweet vanilla. 

The second tea from the "feel alive" family is the Detox with Lemon....

Detox with Lemon - Pukka herbal tea

Lorna really enjoyed this soothing blend of aniseed, sweet fennel, cardamom, lemon, lemon myrtle and lemongrass. The brew was pale yellow in colour, and had a spicy, aromatic aroma - it's definitely an uplifting cup of tea, perfect for a cold winter morning.

Again this is a caffeine free blend, which tastes wonderful hot .....but also rather good once its gone cold! There was nothing overpowering or artificial about this blend.

Next we moved onto the "taste alive" family of teas. 

These are Pukka teas that are bursting with flavour.....

Chamomile, vanilla and manuka honey - Pukka herbal tea

Melissa was the taste tester for the Chamomile, vanilla and manuka honey blend and her initial comment was that it smelt just like a freshly baked tarte tartin, a tasty blend of apples and caramel. 

The honey and vanilla make this cup of chamomile an altogether sweeter cup of tea, very smooth and comforting. The brew was a pale yellow in colour and makes for a perfect caffeine free everyday cup of tea.

Finally we enjoyed one of the "super fruity" teas....

Pukka herbal tea

The Wild Apple & Cinnamon with ginger blend was tested by Becca, who really enjoyed this fruity tea, which reminded her of Christmas. The blend is warming - perfect for the winter months, with the ginger and cinnamon complimenting the apples. 

Again, this is a caffeine free blend which gives a pale yellow brew - slightly reminiscent of mulled wine. Again there was no artificial tastes with this cup of tea.

Tried and Tested....More from Whittard

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea article from Tea With Me and Friends. Recently I was lucky enough to receive a lovely package of tea from Whittard, which included the Chelsea Garden loose tea and the Mango and Bergamot loose leaf.

I recently had the lovely Becca over at my house, so I decided some tea tasting was in order.....

We decided to start with the Chelsea Garden Blend which is a blended tea with white tea, rosebuds and flavouring, which was Whittard's tea of the month in May. White tea is the base for this blend, which is very delicate, light and sweet.

The tea is made from the youngest buds and softest leaves, which are then left to dry naturally in the mountain air. When we opened the package we found the leaves were quite large and did not fit in my infuser and so we made a pot of tea for this one...

This tea was a lovely amber colour when brewed. We found the tea to be light in flavour, not overly floral and something we could enjoy at different times in the day. We brewed the tea for about three minutes and drank it without milk.

We then moved onto the Mango and Bergamot blend, which has green tea as a base. The Green Sencha is combined with petals and the flavour of mango, lulo and a gentle hint of bergamot to make a really pretty blend....

This tea is sweet and fruity, yet light and not at all synthetic. Again we brewed it for about three minutes and did not use milk or sugar. ....

The tea was light in colour when brewed and very refreshing. I have since enjoyed this tea at different times of the day, but I particularly enjoy it as an afternoon beverage.

The Chelsea Garden tea is £6.00 for 50g and the Mango and Bergamot is £6.00 for 100g.

Tried and Tested....Whittard English Rose Tea

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea article from Tea With Me and Friends.

Recently I received a wonderful box full of tea goodies from Whittard and Joanne at Halpern. I have to say that I was rather excited as I rummaged through the box that arrived with me and I look forward to sharing with you the various teas that I have enjoyed as a result.

I will start with the English Rose Tea that I was sent, complete with a cute little infuser. This is part of the Alice in Wonderland themed range on offer at Whittard, and I was rather pleased to also find this charming fine bone china mug to drink my tea from....

The mug has a lovely key handle, which I thought was a brilliant quirky touch. Although Joe found it a little too delicate to use ("I'll snap that" were his exact words), I am pleased to report that anyone with normal sized hands will find the handle a good size and easy to use. The design is very elegant and would make any Alice in Wonderland fan happy!

The tea itself is a blended black tea with flavouring, which is best enjoyed without milk. The black tea leaves are enhanced with rose petals to produce a rather fruity blend, which I found really pleasant. 

The leaves are very dark in colour as expected, punctuated with the colourful rose petals. I'd recommend about a teaspoon of them per cup, infused in freshly boiled water.

I really liked the handy infuser, which was easy to use and allowed for simple brewing once my water had boiled.

Once brewed the tea has a beautiful amber colour and wonderful aroma. 

If I'm honest - I'm not normally a rose tea fan, as I often find them very artificial and far too floral to enjoy. However, the rose in this brew was quite subtle and gave a sweet, almost fruity taste to the tea which I enjoyed.

I found this to be a very mellow tea, that I enjoyed at different times of the day - but it was particularly refreshing in the afternoon with a slice of cake! 

In fact I enjoyed this tea so much that when I worked away from home this week (three nights away) I took my loose leaf tea, infuser and mug with me! Now, I think this might make me a bit of a tea snob....but I really enjoyed having a decent cup of tea at the end of the work day!

Tried and Tested....Proper Tea White Peony

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea article from Tea With Me and Friends. Today I wanted to share with you a rather lovely white tea that I have tried recently enjoyed.

Proper Tea is a contemporary tea room in Manchester which specialises in loose leaf teas. They offer a wide variety of different teas, something for everyone - including five different Earl Grey varieties, black teas, green teas, flowering teas and many more.

I have amongst my tea collection their white peony tea.....

White peony tends to be a refreshing tea, with a slight sweetness to it which I really enjoy. This tea didn't disappoint, it was smooth with a slight nuttiness, and a lovely golden colour when brewed for just under two minutes.

I found this a gentle, refreshing cup of tea which I could enjoy at any point of the day.

Tried and Tested.....Teapigs

Welcome back to another Tried and Tested tea post from Tea With Me and Friends. Today we are sharing with you some of the wonderful teas from Teapigs that we have recently enjoyed.

Now you might have seen teapigs before - but do you know much about them? Teapigs were born in 2006 by Nick and Louise who wanted to bring the world pure and simple, high quality tea. Their tea list includes 24 whole leaf tea varities, served either loose leaf or in their tea temples. Black, green, red or herbal teas can all be found on their website.

To start with I thought I would show you something quite different....popcorn tea! This is a Japanese favourite and blends together traditional green tea with toasted rice. Sounds crazy...but tastes wonderfully nutty and totally unique.

The tea temple is full of the toasted rice, which gives a wonderful aroma and whole green tea leaves. I brewed my tea for approximately 3 minutes and was pleased by the amber colour of my brew.....

It tastes like no tea I have tried before - very fresh, but with a distinctive nutty flavour. 15 tea temples will cost you £4.49, which is 30p a cup.

Next, lets look at the Super Fruit tea on offer, which is full of Hibiscus, elderberry, blackcurrant, raisin, natural flavours, ligonberry and blueberry.....

Fruity teas are usually my least favourite brew as they are often quite wishy-washy in flavour. However, Teapigs have changed my point of view by creating a fruit tea using whole berries in their tea temples to give more flavour when brewed.

I brewed my tea temple for about 3 minutes again and gained a cup of deep red, berry flavoured tea! It's a cheerful colour to look at in the cup and is very fruity on the tastebuds too. I would definitly buy this one again, and would like to try it cold as I imagine that would be very tasty too.

Finally I wanted to share with you the mao feng green tea.....

This is a delicate, yet tasty green tea that produces a wonderfully pale green cup of tea. I have tried lots of different green teas, but this one gives flavour yet is not over powering - very refreshing.

Tried and Tested....Tea So Tea

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea post from Tea With Me and Friends. Recently I was contacted by the lovely people at Tea So Tea, a tea company that is the product of a Sri Lankan family who has been trading in tea since 1943.

Tea So Tea's tea is certified Fair Trade, Carbon Neutral and forest garden grown - there are six teas in their range and in this post we have tried the five teas that come in bagged form.

We began our tea adventure with the Organic Jungle Chai which retails at £4.00 for 20 teabags. This is a warming tea, spiced with organic cloves, cardamoms, cinnamon and orange peel with a base of organic black tea.

This tea was a beautiful amber colour when brewed for a couple of minutes, initially we decided to try it made with water rather than milk. The brew smelt strongly of cloves, but we found that the taste was much more subtle. The cinnamon was very warming, and it reminded us all of Christmas time. This was Becca's favourite tea from the selection, although she didn't enjoy it as much when made with milk.

After this tea we moved onto the Organic Green Tea with Lemongrass & Ginger, again this retails at £4.00 for 20 teabags. This blend of lemongrass and ginger with organic green tea is designed to re-energise the drinker.

A bright and cheerful blend, when brewed this tea had a very unique aroma, but we couldn't particularly taste the ginger in the blend. 

From here we moved onto another of the black teas, opting for the organic black tea which was infused with vanilla.  Again, this retails at £4.00 for a box of 20 teabags. I was interested to smell and taste this particular blend, as vanilla can often taste/smell a little artificial.

Tea So Tea have taken their organic black tea and enhanced it by blending in organic vanilla grown in their forest gardens alongside the tea bush. The flavour and aroma are both very subtle and not at all artificial, making for a lovely cup of tea.

We then turned our attention to a tea that I am not so keen on generally - a mint tea. Tea So Tea have given mint tea a slightly different slant, taking their green tea and blending it with mint for their Organic Green Tea with Mint.

Now I am a little biased here as I am generally not a fan of mint teas but this tea didn't really rock my world! The tea did have a nice minty aroma and was a pleasant colour when brewed, and I imagine a mint tea drinker would love this tea. The green tea and mint are grown together in the Tea So Tea forest gardens.

Finally we ended up a good old fashioned cup of black tea.....

We finished on a really positive note with this charming black tea. It was a beautiful amber colour when brewed and tasted refreshing.....this was a clear favourite for Lorna. Again, this tea costs £4.00 for 20 teabags.

All in all this was a lovely selection of teas to try, all of which would make a nice addition to any tea lovers tea collection! I am particularly fond of the packaging, which can be taken apart and re-used as pretty  storage boxes....

Every item of the package, from the bag to the pack, has been selected by Tea so Tea to minimise its impact to the environment and, where possible, to be reusable.

The transparent pyramid teabags are also 100% biodegradable.

Tea from England?

I hope you have enjoyed tea month at Tea With Me and Friends, we have certainly enjoyed sharing our new tea knowledge and trying lots of different teas...something we are going to continue doing and sharing!

I thought we would end tea month with a look at some homegrown tea - now if you joined us earlier in the month you will know that tea is traditionally grown in China and India. But did you know that there is tea being grown in England too....on the Tregothnan Estate near Truro, Cornwall to be precise!

The estate has been growing and selling tea locally since about 2000, but it is now appearing in more and more places....including it seems Waitrose! Lorna and I discovered this tea recently when Mum decided to order it with her Mother's Day afternoon tea at Browns Hotel, London.

The estate now grows and blends tea creating a range of different teas and herbal infusions, including the Great British Tea, which we sampled at Browns Hotel. This is a blend of Cornish tea leaves and Assam, which the estate created for 10 Downing Street, to celebrate the government's GREAT initiative which is inviting the world to trade with Britain. The tea when brewed has a wonderful warm colour and a great strong taste, which we think could be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Tried and Tested .....Twinings Tea - Awake

As we are coming to the end of tea month on Tea With Me and Friends I thought it was time that I shared with you another tried and tested tea review.

Recently I was a little disappointed to discover that one of my Twinings teabags had exploded in it's box. When I brought this to Twinings attention I am pleased to report that their customer service response was not only speedy, but also very customer focused. I received a letter from them within days, which also included some vouchers and also some new teabags to try - I was very impressed!

I have to say that I was rather intrigued by the attractive bright orange packaging of the Awake teabag and so I decided to give this one a try first. When I read about the tea on the Twinings website I found it is a herbal infusion featuring rooibos, ginger and ginseng making it a caffeine free way to kick start your day.

Just looking at the packet makes me smile!

The tea itself is indeed very refreshing and bright, as it includes a hint of peppermint and cinnamon with the other ingredients. I brewed the tea for a couple of minutes, as recommended by Twinings, and was pleased with the warm appearance of the brew.

This tea both looked and smelt great, and also tickled the taste buds - a great alternative to my usual cup of strong black tea or coffee first thing in the morning!

Tried and Tested.....Williamson Tea - Traditional Afternoon

Welcome back to another tried and tested tea article from Tea With Me and Friends, today we'd like to share with you a lovely Traditional Afternoon tea from Williamson Tea.

Now I first discovered Williamson Tea when wandering the tea aisle in a Supermarket, I was approached by a lady who couldn't reach the tea on the top shelf and she asked if I could reach a box for her. It turned out to be Williamson Tea, which she heartily recommended. The tea was on offer at the time and I thought "why not!", so I bought my first box of Traditional Afternoon tea! I am so pleased that the lady passed on this recommendation, as this is definitely one of my "go to" teas!

Williamson Tea are a family owned business who grow, select and blend their teas in Kenya on four different family owned farms. They tea comes in lovely silver cartons, loose leaf caddies and also fabulous elephant tea caddies.

Their range includes a breakfast tea, an afternoon tea, a green tea, an earl grey and some of their own blends to name a few. My favourite has to be their Traditional Afternoon tea, as its easy to drink with a good flavour. The website calls it a classic afternoon tea, with good body. I love the golden colour that it has.

In regards to cost, the tea bags are £2.49 for 50 bags or you can buy 100g of loose leaf tea for £4.05. You can also buy wonderful elephant tea caddies which start from just under £7 for a medium caddie.

Today's tried and tested tea is called Bishop's Breakfast from Char Teas who are based in Winchester. I first discovered this blend of tea when I enjoyed an afternoon tea at The Exclusive Cake Shop and Vintage Tea Room in Midhurst - this was just one of the teas on their extensive menu.

Char Teas are loose tea suppliers that have been sourcing and selling teas since 2006, as well as a shop in Winchester they also have an online store where you can pick from over 150 loose leaf teas! If that vast choice sounds a little mind boggling Char have a section of recommended teas and a tea of the month to inspire you!

Right.....back to our tried and tested tea - Bishop's Breakfast is a broken leaf black tea, with a beautiful copper colour when brewed. The teas are from Assam, Ceylon and Sumatra and make a really warming cup of tea, that I think could be enjoyed at any time during the day.

The flavour is quite spiced, but not at all unpleasant and as you can see from my photo I enjoyed my tea black. I used the recommended one level teaspoon of leaves per cup, and brewed my tea for approximately three minutes. 

 Bishop's Breakfast is currently available from Char tea for under £4 for a 100g silver foil pouch.
