Coffee and Cake worth walking for!

 Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - we hope you are keeping well today.

As you know, we love to support local, independent businesses especially when they help with our coffee and cake cravings! Imagine my delight when I discovered that Bakehouse, the fabulous baker from Aldershot who we have featured before on the blog, has teamed up with The Coffee Cabin!

May I present Farnham's newest mobile coffee van...Candice!

The van serves tea from T2, along with coffee from DT Roastery in Winchester, hot chocolate, and freshly baked treats from Bakehouse. Amy, the owner, is super friendly and serves the coffee with a smile, even in the awful wet, cold weather we're experiencing at the moment.

Being a mobile offering, means that Amy and Candice the van move around the area, so you need to check out the Instagram account to find out where they are.

I have visited the Coffee Can twice now, both times they have been located on the Shepherd and Flock roundabout in Farnham (passed the pub and down the lane a little bit). But they have also spent some time in passed week at The Royal Oak pub in Wreclesham. So far I have enjoyed a black americano and a mocha, both have been delicious. I particularly enjoyed the mocha, which was chocolatey and a little bit bitter - the perfect blend. I also want to head back for a hot chocolate, which looks delicious!

Cake-wise I have sampled the peanut butter slice and the salted caramel cupcake. As you already know I love Bakehouse cakes, which are always fresh and so full of flavour. The salted caramel cupcake was really good though, with the perfect ratio of cake to icing....it's possibly my favourite cupcake from Bakehouse so far!

I should also mention that Amy uses biodegradable cups for her hot drinks.

If you happen to be in the Farnham area of Surrey and fancy a cup of coffee, I'd definitely recommend looking for Amy and Candice the van! I'll be heading back....there are a lot more cakes to sample!

Time for something cute from Peggy Porschen!

Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends!

I've finally made it to the Peggy Porschen Parlour in Belgravia and I wanted to share my experience with you. I've wanted to visit the Parlour for ages, it looks so pretty and the cakes so scrummy, I wanted to see whether it lives up to the hype and Instagram love!

Located on a corner, its pink exterior can be spotted from the end of the road....

I visited when they still had their Winter Parlour decorations up from the festive season, designed to compliment their Cosy Collection sweets and treats.

The interior of this tiny parlour has shelves full of pretty bakes that you can buy to enjoy at home - its really gorgeous!

The Parlour is a small space and because of this they do not take reservations (they also ask that you return tables after an hour), you just have to turn up and keep your fingers crossed! There is seating both inside and outside, but be warned.....it's cosy! If you arrive and there are no tables free and you don't want to wait, you can have any of the cakes available as a take away option.

As well as the standard menu of cupcakes, layer cakes and tray bakes, the Parlour also offers seasonal specials. Among others, the standard flavours include chocolate heaven and salted caramel cupcakes, lemon, raspberry and rose layer cakes and chocolate brownies. The menu is extensive, but all the cakes are on display and the staff are knowledgeable if you need some help picking your treat.

The Cosy Collection, which was available when we visited, included the Cosy Cashmere layer cake - an almond sponge layered with a smooth coconut buttercream. There were also starry snowmen cupcakes, either in a chocolate flavour or gingerbread and lemon flavour and a variety of cute iced biscuits.

We opted to try a slab of chocolate biscuit cake (and slab is the right word....it's a very generous serving!) and a gingerbread and lemon starry snowman cupcake. The chocolate biscuit cake was like a rocky road bake, it was indulgent and scrummy - packed full of pistachios and marshmallow. You could probably share it between two people though as it was very rich.

The cupcake was super cute to look at....just look at that tiny snowman!

The cappuccinos we enjoyed were also rather pretty looking....

But I bet you're wondering what the cupcake tasted like....was it all style and no substance? I'm please to report back that it was absolutely delicious!

The sponge was moist but light, and full of spicy gingerbread flavour. The topping was a lemon cream cheese frosting, which again was light in texture but well flavoured. Together the flavours blended really well and made for a very enjoyable cupcake.

Although it looked like a big blob of frosting, the ratio between cake and sponge was just right. Nothing was too sweet and I really enjoyed this cupcake. Plus it was really cute....just look at that tiny snowman....

I really enjoyed my visit to The Parlour, the prices are a little expensive but the quality of the food was great. I would also probably only visit with one other person as there isn't much space (we watched a group of five squeeze around a table the same size that we had for two).

If you'd like to see more about Peggy Porschen's Parlour pop by their website

Thank you for popping by today,

Christmas Cheer - Starbucks Takeaway Coffee

Hello there,

Welcome back to another Christmas Cheer blog post from Tea With Me and Friends. Were you inspired to try the brussels sprouts tea after our last post??

Today we are joined by the lovely Becca and her sister Sam as they recently tried some Starbucks Christmas coffees while out and about in London. During their shopping trip Becca and Sam decided they wanted some caffeine and so headed to Starbucks......they picked the Gingerbread latte and the Toffee Nut Latte from the Christmas menu.

Here are their coffees.....artfully arranged in a Christmas tree in Harrods....

Did you know that Starbucks started selling coffee in 1971?

Anyway, quiz night facts aside....lets see what Becca and Sam thought of their festive coffees.

The toffee nut latte is not new to the Starbucks Christmas menu, but apparently its a firm favourite of Starbucks fans! Its a blend of two shots of espresso, milk and toffee nut syrup. If you are feeling extra decadent you can also have whipped cream and toffee nut sprinkles on top.

Sam told us that this drink was rich and creamy, but very sweet - not for the faint hearted!

Becca enjoyed the Gingerbread Latte (which I have also tried), which is made from two shots of espresso, milk and gingerbread syrup. Again, if you want extra luxury you can top your latte with ginger whip cream and wafer topping.

Becca really enjoyed this drink, she thought there was just enough ginger and it wasn't too sweet. I also really enjoyed this latte when I tried it - I'm not normally a milky coffee fan, but the balance of ginger in this coffee is really good.

Have you tried these Christmas coffees? We'd love to know what you thought of them!

Thanks for popping by today, we'll be back soon with more Christmas Cheer!

Christmas Cheer - Christmas Creme Brulee from Starbucks

Hello,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends and our first Christmas Cheer blog post!

I went for a mooch around Farnham on Sunday (I do love a mooch around the shops!) and ducked into Starbucks to avoid a shower. Instead of my usual black coffee I decided to sample one of the Christmas blends, Starbucks have several different options mostly latte blends such as Gingerbread Latte or Toffee Nut Latte.

I opted for the Christmas Crème Brulee Latte and a Salted Caramel Christmas tree....

Let's start with the coffee, if I'm honest I wouldn't normally pick a latte, but I was tempted by this one with it's vanilla and caramel flavours.

The blurb on the Startbucks website describes it as....."Rich Crème Brulee Sauce is mixed with creamy eggnog milk, poured over our Espresso Roast and finished with a Christmas Brulee topping for a festive take on the traditional Crème Brulee."

It did indeed taste rich and creamy, with a nice caramel finish. But I couldn't have drank more than the small cup I had, it's quite a sweet coffee too!

In the photo below you can see the Christmas Brulee topping....

The salted caramel Christmas tree is a rice crispy and pretzel treat which is decorated with golden balls and white chocolate stars. It looks very pretty and is a good sized portion (you might even want to cut it in half and share it with someone).

I'm glad this was a salted caramel treat as the salt cut through the sweetness nicely. I also liked the addition of pretzel pieces in with the rice cripsys as it gave the treat another texture.

All in all a nice sweet treat.....maybe a little too sweet with the flavoured coffee as well....I hit a bit of a sugar high as I was walking back along the main street!

Have you enjoyed a Christmas Crème Brulee from Starbucks? If so what did you think?

Thank you for popping by today, we hope you enjoyed our first Christmas Cheer post! Look out for more posts over the coming weeks!

The Tea Review - Cupsmith

Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - a couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of discovering a new coffee and tea company which is based in Farnham, Surrey. I met George from Cupsmith at the Farnham Maltings monthly market where he was selling both coffee and tea.

Cupsmith have been selling coffee for about a year and I discovered that they even roast their own beans weekly, in their lovely roastery. They added tea to their range shortly after and now sell online, at markets and directly from the roastery. Their range is deliberately simple and their Instagram feed is just gorgeous!

I chatted to George for a while about the range of teas on offer and opted to try Mr Crawford's Afternoon Tea (their product names and packaging are all super cute!). This afternoon tea blend includes black and green Chinese teas with jasmine petals, rose petals & bergamot oil.

Mr Crawford Afternoon Tea - Cupsmith

The tea once brewed is delightful - its got a full flavour, but its not overpowering. It makes a perfect blend to enjoy in the afternoon with a slice of cake.....or anytime really! I've made my way through my initial bag fairly quickly!

The tea is sold in leaf form in pyramids, making it easier to enjoy a quality cup of tea at home. You can buy the pyramids in boxes of 15, 50 or 100 bags.

The other teas in the range include a robust breakfast tea, an earl grey, a peppermint tea, a "calm days" herbal tea and even a Christmas blend. Take a peek at the Cupsmith's website to read more.

I'm looking forward to discovering more of the range for myself - if you already have a favourite blend from Cupsmith let us know!

Let's Celebrate Cocktail Week.....with a coffee or two!

Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends! Did you know that International Coffee Day is this week? Neither did we! It's no secret that Lorna and I are partial to the odd cup of coffee as well as the gallons of tea we enjoy....we also love a cocktail or two. Today's post combines two of our favourite beverages....

In honour of Cocktail Week and International Coffee Day on 1st October, the bars within Jason Atherton’s The Social Company are teaming up with Mr Black to create a range of cocktails featuring the Australian distillery’s coffee liqueur to be available from 26th September until 1st October.

Cold-extracted at 23 degrees, Mr Black’s coffee liqueur packs a punch of coffee flavour, providing the perfect base for a range of cocktails all displaying The Social Company’s signature playful and creative cocktails.

The Geisha at 7 Tales

Located downstairs at Japanese restaurant, Sosharu, downtown Tokyo inspired bar, 7 Tales, will be offering a particularly exclusive cocktail to mark International Coffee Week. The jewel in the crown of Mr Black’s collection, the Panama Geisha is a prize winning and limited edition coffee liqueur, with only 289 bottles available worldwide. With the Geisha an iconic character within Japanese culture, the coffee liqueur is a natural fit for 7 Tales’ Japanese-inspired menu and will be blended with 1999 Nikka coffey grain from the bar’s extensive collection of whiskies. Served in an elegant coupette glass and garnished with a stencil of the quintessential Japanese cultural figure, ‘The Geisha’ features a banana, apricot and sesame foam to create a subtle tropical flavour that pairs perfectly with the coffee liqueur and the 1999 Nikka coffey grain, presenting a modern interpretation of an espresso martini. Priced at £50 per glass, reflecting the exclusive nature of the ingredients used, ‘The Geisha’ will be London’s most luxurious tribute to this year’s International Coffee Day.

Hard Wired Cherry Cola at The Blind Pig

In celebration of International Coffee Day, guests at Jason Atherton’s speakeasy-style bar, The Blind Pig, can enjoy the specially created Hard Wired Cherry Cola. With a blend of Mr Black coffee liqueur, Cherry Heering, a cherry flavoured-brandy, a dash of Fernet Branca digestif and a topping of cherry cola, and finished with a cherry and lemon twist garnish, the cocktail offers guests a grown up interpretation of the classic childhood fizzy drink.

Coff’ Medicine at Pollen Street Social

This International Coffee Day, the bar at Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social will be serving Coff’ Medicine, created by Group Bar Executive, Jamie Jones. Using Mr Black coffee liqueur as the base, Coff’ Medicine is a heady mix of mescal, Campari and chilli and chocolate bitters, to complement the coffee undertones. Garnished with an orange twist and prescription garnish, Coff’ Medicine is just what the doctor ordered.

Black to the Future at City Social

To celebrate this year’s Coffee Day, guests at the bar at Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred City Social can enjoy Black to the Future. A futuristic take on an espresso martini, instead of coffee, the bar team will be blending Mr Black coffee liqueur with Aylesbury Duck vodka and dash of soy sauce to create a cocktail more akin to a dirty vodka martini. In a nod to the cocktail’s movie namesake, Black to the Future will also be garnished with an OUTATIME number plate, for a cocktail that plays with visuals as well as flavours.

I don't know about you, but I love the sound of the Hard Wired Cherry Cola!

Time for a spot of.....coffee and cake - Krema Farnham

Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends.

Last December Krema Coffee opened its doors in Downing Street, Farnham in Surrey .....and last weekend.....four months later..... I finally got around to sampling some of the delights on offer!

Krema Artisan Coffee - Farnham, Surrey

Krema Coffee is independently owned and committed to supporting the local community, and where possible sourcing their food and drink from quality local suppliers. Their freshly roasted speciality coffee is undoubtedly the star of the show, along with a great range of loose leaf teas, hot chocolate, cold press juices and soft drinks.

They also serve sandwiches, soups and salads prepared freshly every day using locally-baked artisan breads, meats and cheeses and I'm pleased to report that they have a rather fine selection of handmade cakes and sweet treats on offer!

John (centre) and his team at Krema Coffee, Farnham

The interior of Krema Coffee is rustic but comfortable and the team of staff are friendly and very helpful if you are stuck making your refreshment decisions!

When I popped by I was in need of a good lunch.....and I was really spoilt for choice. Krema Coffee have a good selection of both sweet and savoury items to pick from, displayed in wonderful bowls or stacked up high in their glass cabinets.....

Decisions, decisions at Krema Coffee

I opted to go for a cheese and tomato toastie and a huge slab of Victoria sponge cake, washed down with a Tropical Smoothie (I know I know....I should have enjoyed a coffee or a cup of tea....but the night before had taken its toll and I really need some hydration!!).

The food is freshly prepared and the portion sizes generous....

Toasted cheese & tomato sandwich and victoria sponge - Krema Coffee

The toasted sandwich is made with good quality bread and served with a small fresh side salad. If you are looking for a fully toasted sandwich, which leaks melted cheese from the sides then this might not be the sandwich for you - but I thoroughly enjoyed it....

My Tropical Smoothie really hit the spot and the cake was scrummy!

Just take a look at the size of it....with a great ratio of cake to filling....

How cake is done at Krema Coffee, Farnham

I had the pleasure of meeting owner John as I was leaving and he told me all about the freshly made salads and fruit smoothies that are proving to be very popular at the moment.

I'll definitely be popping back for some of that tomato and mozzarella salad....

He also pointed out the rather scrummy selection of squares, which I think I'm going to have to sample on my next visits....

A selection of sweet squares at Krema Coffee, Farnham

It's always great to find new local businesses that offer good quality tea, coffee and of course cake! If you happen to be in the Farnham area and fancy a piece of cake you should give Krema a go!

If you'd like to know more about Krema pop by their Facebook page.

Time for something a little different....a cup of coffee!

Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends!

So, some of our regular readers might find this blog post a little shocking.....normally we feature tea on this blog....well tea, bubbles and the odd cocktail or two (ok maybe three or four), but today we're going to feature my other favourite hot beverage - coffee!

Yep, Lorna and I are partial to a cup of coffee...in fact we drink quite a bit of coffee during an average week! One of my work colleagues found this little fact very shocking when I requested a cup of coffee instead of tea recently - exclaiming "but you write a tea blog!".

So, when Purssells London contacted us recently, asking if we'd like to try their coffee....we thought...why not!

Purssells London Coffee

So who are Purssells London?

They are a contemporary coffee roaster , whose coffee is classified as Speciality Coffee. They are proud of the quality, provenance and taste of their coffee.

Their range includes seasonal espresso blends, as well as light and meduim roasts as well as a decaffeinated coffee.

We were sent the current seasonal espresso blend to try - Queen's India

Purssells London Coffee
Queen's India

This coffee is made with Brazilian, Colombian and Ethiopian coffees. It is roasted slightly darker to complement milk based drinks - it's supposed to be a refined and sophisticated espresso coffee. It is the most popular Purssells coffee.

As it's an espresso blend, the grind is very fine and the coffee smells amazing - I just love that burst of coffee aroma when you first open a new packet!

Purssells London coffee

When brewed the coffee is smooth and rich - a really enjoyable cup of coffee.

You can either buy the coffee in individual packets or as a monthly subscription. For more information pop by the Purssells London website.

I'd like to thank Purssells London for sending us thier coffee to try - but please remember that this has not affected our taste buds and all opinions expressed in this article are our own,

Thank you for popping by today,
Rachel

Time for Tea....an afternoon tea adventure with a frustrated tea-loving American

Hello there,

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - we hope you've had a tea-riffic week!

As you know, we love to feature the afternoon tea adventures of our readers as they enjoy a spot of tea....wherever they are in the world! Earlier this summer I was really excited to meet Valarie from Portland, America....we enjoyed a spot of tea at The Goring and Valerie promised to let me know when she went on her next American afternoon tea adventure. Valerie did warn me about the lack of tea drinking opportunities at home....she packed an impressive amount of London afternoon teas into her visit over the summer!

Well guess what.....today we have a wonderful post from Valarie and her recent afternoon tea adventure at Heathmans, describing an experience most British afternoon tea lovers would shudder at....

The Heathmann Hotel, Portland

The afternoon tea at the Heathman Hotel in Portland, Oregon, serves mascarpone with their scones. Not clotted cream - mascarpone. And yet, I've returned to this tea many times, and am already looking forward to the next visit.

Afternoon tea scone - The Heathmann, Portland

Let me back up.......

If you've ever seen the TV show Portlandia, which pokes fun at our "farm-to-table" food culture, you might assume that, somewhere among all the food carts, pop-up restaurants and bike-powered smoothie bars, someone would have created an afternoon tea that emphasizes fresh, local produce and artisanal breads to be enjoyed in some kind of fun or funky environment. Sadly, you would be wrong.

The U.S. is coffee country. If a friend here offers me tea, my options are almost exclusively herbal, green, Lipton's (east coast) or organic black tea that looks and tastes like dishwater (west coast). (Assam tea and breakfast blends are my jam.) And Portland is ground zero for American coffee culture, with more coffeehouses per capita than any other U.S. city except Seattle (home to Starbucks), a short (in west coast terms) three-hour drive north.

Valarie enjoying a spot of afternoon
tea at The Goring

But there are other matters that complicate the procurement of a quality afternoon tea here. Portland is a young city (founded in 1851) that offers only one Fortune 500 business; since we don't have the history and wealth of economic and political centers like New York, Boston or Washington D.C., we don't have the kind of opulent, traditional hotels that are most likely to host an afternoon tea in the U.S.

We also have very little sense of ritual out here. Weddings are far more likely to be outdoors as in a church; they typically last just slightly longer than it takes for the bride to toss the bouquet. Funerals might consist of a traditional service, but they could just as easily be a memorial held a month - or even a year - after the loved one has died ... if an event is held at all. In many ways, I particularly enjoy this kind of freedom from the past, but there are times when I miss the formality and tradition I experienced growing up on the east coast, just north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The few teahouses we do have in Oregon are mostly in Portland's suburbs and are either Asian, featuring snacks like dumplings and edamame, or precious, fussy, Victorian-style parodies, overflowing with doilies and offering hats that women can dress up in for their tea. Well, no thank you.

So when I have tea at the Heathman Hotel, a classic hotel with a tea court that features an elegant Austrian hand-cut chandelier and a roaring fireplace, you may understand why I'm willing to overlook transgressions such as the mascarpone scone spread.

My dearest friend-in-tea Becca and I have been going to the Heathman's tea for years to enjoy the many things that I do like. Their buttermilk scones (with currants) have a toasty outside that I love.

Afternoon tea - The Heathmann, Portland

They send out a selection of savories that not only feature a variety of textures but also pull back on the carbapalooza at most teas, offering one sandwich (cucumber) along with creamy goat cheese on crunchy crostini, a sun-dried deviled egg, smoked chicken salad in a small pita and smoked salmon profiteroles, which could use a little more oomph (perhaps salt? capers? dill?). The desserts are also quite delish, offering a similar variety of textures, even if chocolate dominates. I particularly love something called a feuilletine, which is a sort of napoleon that features a nice little crunch amidst layers of smooth chocolate and peanut butter. There is also a lovely chocolate mousse, a marshmallow, a devil's food cupcake and a lemon tart, which brings a welcome acidity to all the sweetness.

Afternoon tea savouries - The Heathmann, Portland

But there are still things I wish they would change, and I'm not just talking about the mascarpone. For one thing, the tea itself, made by a company called Fonte (the logo on the menu says it's a "micro coffee roaster"), is weak and uninspired. In a town like Portland, why not feature some local teas, particularly the spectacular Steven Smith brand? (Steven Smith makes a tea called Brahmin that is the only American tea I know of to rival its English cousins.) Becca and I also frequently wonder about the banana bread, which is placed on the same tier as the scones. It's tasty, but unnecessary, and we both agree that we'd rather have an extra scone or savory in its place. And one small thing: the cucumber sandwich should be placed on the tier with the savories, not on the same tier as the scones!

Afternoon tea sweets - Heathmann, Portland

Becca has also wondered if the Peter Rabbit tea ("for littler sippers") couldn't offer a more traditional tea for her small children. While she's grateful they have an option for children, she wishes it could be just a smaller version of adult teas, rather than things like cheese slices, Goldfish and carrot sticks.

Most of all, I wish they would change up their menu, which has been essentially the same for years. What about featuring seasonal teas? The place is mobbed for their holiday teas (which, incidentally, features exactly the same menu as their non-holiday tea), so why not give people reasons to keep coming back? With Portland becoming known as a foodie town, why not have a local chef curate a week of teas? What about tying it in to big events, such as Portland Fashion Week? The Heathman Hotel has a renowned library, with many first editions signed by authors who stayed there for readings given at Powells (the world's largest new and used bookstore). Why not use the week before Wordstock, the city's giant, one-day literary celebration, filled with workshops and readings with local and international authors, to host a literary tea that ties in with their library?

I appreciate the Heathman's teas and the effort they put into the occasion. With just a few key changes, they could honor the tradition of afternoon tea while celebrating the uniqueness of Portland. If they would just think a little more creatively, it could be something special.

I know how much Valarie appreciates a great cup of tea and a well thought out afternoon tea....so it makes me sad to think her local tea houses and hotels don't offer her the kind of tea experience she craves for (Valarie - you will just have to start planning your next trip back to the UK!).

A big thank you to Valarie for sharing this afternoon tea adventure with us, if you've had an afternoon tea you'd like to share with us please get in touch.

Thank you for popping by today,
Rachel

Afternoon Tea News.....Afternoon Coffee at The Arch London

Hello there,

Welcome back to an afternoon tea....or should that be afternoon coffee news article from Tea With Me and Friends! Yes, today we are sharing a little news from the world of coffee (shock horror!). When Lorna and I first started enjoying afternoon tea adventures we were rather partial to a cup of coffee....in some cases we might have asked for coffee instead of tea....yes I know...terrible behaviour! Lorna will probably not forgive me for letting our little secret out!

Today we still love a cup of strong black coffee and also rather enjoy coffee cake.....so when we heard about this afternoon coffee adventure to celebrate Coffee Week (4-10 May 2015) we wanted to find out more!

Priced at £37 per person, the Afternoon Coffee will include coffee treats to delight coffee lovers such as coffee flavour macaroons, mini coffee éclairs and cakes, as well as a selection of other cakes and pastries, finger sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, and of course a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

Doesn't that sound divine?

The Arch is a 5* London hotel, and afternoon  coffee (or indeed afternoon tea) is served in the ‘Martini Library’ which apparently is rather good for cocktails and also full of beautiful Taschen and Daunt books, celebrating the golden age of Broadway. Look out for the discreet ‘butler buttons’ which are placed by the armchairs!

The Arch, London - the Martini Library

Well, I think this afternoon coffee adventure sounds just perfect for all you afternoon tea lovers who also enjoy indulging in a cup of coffee. You can try this afternoon coffee experience at The Arch during Coffee Week and if you do indulge we'd love to hear about your experience!

If you are more traditional in your afternoon tea adventures, you can also indulge in a traditional afternoon tea which is also served in the Martini Library and costs £37.00 per person.

More information can be found on The Arch's website.

Thank you for popping by today,
Rachel

Time for Tea....Paul Covent Garden

Hello there,

Welcome back to another afternoon tea review blog post from Tea With Me and Friends. This weekend Lorna and I were invited to sample the new afternoon tea on offer at La Maison Paul in Covent Garden in the Le Restaurant de PAUL.

We know Paul for their amazing macaroons and artisan breads that leave us drooling in their bakeries, but we didn't know that they offered an afternoon tea and so we were keen to find out more. Le Restaurant de PAUL is situated behind the Paul Covent Garden shop, and its a bustling but cute space full of chatter and hungry shoppers and tourists.

Now, this isn't the kind of afternoon tea you might want for a special occasion, but it's a great alternative to a spot of lunch when out shopping with friends....read on to find out more....

Afternoon tea Paul - Covent Garden

Now as you can see from this photo, the afternoon tea is served on a rather imposing iron stand. It's such a grand size that Lorna looks tiny sitting behind it! This did make conversation a little difficult as the table is very small, but we managed to situate the stand so we could gossip around it! The afternoon tea is either served with a hot drink from the main menu or for a little more money you can opt for a glass of bubbles. Lorna opted for a pot of green tea and I was rather controversial picking a cup of coffee over the teas on offer (yes I know...naughty afternoon tea person!!).

On the bottom tier we were presented with three rather rustic looking sandwiches, made with Paul's artisan breads....

Afternoon tea sandwiches - Paul
The sandwiches were fresh and the bread had a wonderful texture as you would expect from Paul. As you can see there are crusts galore on that plate and not a finger sandwich in sight, but to be honest this really suited Paul and the food they are well known for. It was good to see that they had taken the concept of a traditional afternoon tea, but not compromised their style of food when creating their offering. The fillings included a salmon and cream cheese, a chicken salad and a rather lovely brie and salad. The sandwiches were all filled well and a good size.

Once we had demolished the sandwiches we moved up a tier.....

Afternoon tea....without scones at Paul

Now I imagine the traditionalists of you out there are looking on rather confused....these are not scones I hear you cry! And you'd be right...there isn't a scone in sight at Paul...however in their place we had the most delicious light and buttery brioche. They were huge and served with whipped cream and strawberry jam.

Again, this swerve from the traditional felt right in Paul, where artisan bread is their speciality. And most importantly.....they were good.....very good!

Finally we moved onto the top tier....now get ready to drool a little....

Afternoon tea cakes - Paul Covent Garden

I think Lorna's face says it all - these really were the jewel on the crown at this afternoon tea!

Let's get a closer look....

Sweet treats - afternoon tea - Paul

In the selection we each had a piece of carrot cake, a piece of strawberry and marzipan cake and a cute little macaroon. The menu states that the tea will consist of two pieces of cake, but doesn't specify which ones....surely that means we can keep going back until we have tried them all!

My favourite was the strawberry gateaux, which was light and filled with creme patisserie. The macaroons were also wonderful, with a crispy shell and soft chewy middle. I wasn't a fan of the carrot cake, which I found quite heavy and dense - however the flavours were wonderful.

Paul introduced this afternoon tea in their Le Restaurant de PAUL in September, and we think it gives visitors a wonderful alternative to the traditional lunch/snack experience. The cost of afternoon tea is £19.90 for tea people including a hot drink each - which is exceptional value for the amount of food served and the quality of it.

It might not be super posh here, but the service was friendly and efficient despite it being really busy. We think this makes a great everyday afternoon tea experience.

Please note that although we were guests at Le Restaurant de PAUL in Covent Garden, this did not affect our thoughts on the afternoon tea experience and all thoughts here are our own.

We'd like to thank Le Restaurant de PAUL for their hospitality. If you would like to find out more about this afternoon tea please visit their website.

Thanks for popping by today,
Rachel & Lorna
