Time for Tea.....Wimbledon themed tea at The Ampersand

Hello there,

Welcome back to another guest post from Tea With Me and Friends...this week the lovely Becca shares with us her recent Wimbledon themed afternoon tea adventure at The Ampersand in London. Regular readers will know that we love the Ampersand, Pastry Chef Ji Sun is so creative and passionate about developing sweet treats that look and taste amazing! We haven't visited in a while so we were keen to see Jo Sun's latest creation....

Wimbledon tennis themed afternoon tea
Ampersand, London

In the background of this scrummy photo you will see Sam....Becca's sister....and this folks is her first afternoon tea! It was Sam's Birthday and she loves the tennis at Wimbledon so this made a wonderful gift! Let's find out what they thought.

The feast begins with the savoury gougeres....

Savoury afternoon tea treats - Ampersand

Becca said they were delicious and she had forgotten how filling they were. Her favourite was the cheese and fruit chutney, but they were all tasty! The other fillings included Glouster old spot ham; smoked salmon, dill and cream cheese and Coronation chicken (my favourite!). Becca commented on how well filled each gougere was.

Once they had finished the savoury treats Becca and her sister start on the scones...

Afternoon tea scones - Ampersand

Each guest is served two scones - one plain and one white chocolate, served with Devonshire clotted cream & homemade raspberry preserve (this is usually strawberry, but Becca has an allergy). They were served warm and I am pleased to report that Becca dressed her scones in the "right" way....

Scones - dressed the Tea With Me and Friends way!

The scones were a good size....so good that Becca only managed to eat the plain scone....as she wanted to make sure she had room for the sweet treats...

Wimbledon Afternoon Tea - Ampersand, London

This is where the Wimbledon theme really begins....just look at that cute little tennis racket! The treats include a coconut mousse and mango passion fruit jelly tennis ball on a lime sponge tennis court, a ginger bread tennis racket, a strawberry and cream tart, a cute little blueberry white chocolate ganache macaroon and a Pimm's cocktail shot.

Ji Sun has really created a lovely collection here and Becca confirmed that everything tasted wonderful too. She particularly enjoyed the tennis ball....

Sweet treats at Ampersand afternoon tea

In fact, she enjoyed it so much she was still talking about it the following weekend when I saw her next! Most importantly.....Sam also enjoyed her first afternoon tea adventure!

The Wimbledon afternoon tea can be enjoyed at the Ampersand until the 17th July and it costs £32.50 per person or £44.50 per person with a glass of Champagne.

You can enjoy a complimentary glass of Champagne Monday - Friday, when booking the Wimbledon Afternoon Tea Special offer on-line. Take a peek at the Ampersand website for more information.

Time for Tea....Back to the Ampersand!

Hello there,

Happy Saturday! Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends for another fab guest post from our lovely reader Victoria Redshaw. If you've popped by before you'll probably recognise Victoria's name as she has written a couple of fab guest post for us now and we always love to hear about her latest afternoon tea adventure.....

Having visited this blog for afternoon tea inspiration on a few occasions, Marian, my oldest friend and I selected the Ampersand Hotel for our next girly meet up, thanks to Rachel & Lorna’s recommendation.  We were attracted by the location, the variety of sweet treats by pastry chef Ju Sin and the fact that they offer a vegetarian option, which was perfect for Marian, and I could still have the “classic”.

The area for afternoon tea is beautifully decorated, with quirky furnishings and a bird theme running throughout.  We were on a table which was very low, but with equally low chairs; we loved it!  We did have the option of moving to a “proper” table, but decided we were perfectly happy with our position which was also perfect for people watching!

Before we received our afternoon tea, we had a glass of champagne each – celebrating Marian’s imminent house move, my new job and our birthdays.  Well, why not?

Marian enjoying some bubbles with her tea

So, to start we had a selection of tartines (open sandwiches) on the thinnest of French bread.  Yes, there is a crust on there, but it worked incredibly well.  On the classic option, there was smoked salmon, coronation chicken, cheddar cheese and a turkey and mustard tartine.  Marian’s vegetarian plate had egg and watercress, cucumber and a goat’s cheese with apple tartine.  The thinness of the bread ensured that we weren’t too bloated, which we both agreed was beneficial.

Afternoon tea open sandwiches - Ampersand

Onto the scones.  Beautifully fresh, one fruit scone and one plain served with strawberry jam and a scoop of clotted cream.  We both agreed they were delicious.  Marian almost left part of hers, having seen the top layer of sweet treats, but then thought better of it!  So frequently people seem to make a scone too “claggy”, but these were perfect!

Afternoon tea scones - Ampersand

So, that top layer.  Well, what a great bunch of sweet treats they were!  The lemon meringue tart was simply superb, with the most delicious lemon curd inside.  The English breakfast tea chocolate bonbon was perfect, in fact I’m still thinking about it now.  However, my very favourite was the perfectly light chocolate brownie with peanut honey ganache.  Wow!  What a show stopper!

Afternoon tea sweets - Ampersand

All this was washed down with a leaf tea – mine was a supremely fragrant Jasmine Silver Tip and Marian enjoyed the Lemon Verbena, which she said was very refreshing.

The vegetarian afternoon tea was £25 and the classic £27.50.  A glass of champagne added £12 onto the cost of each option.  I see they have a Chelsea Flower Show themed tea from 9th May; maybe I’ll have to return to London rather sooner than I anticipated!

Any regular visitors to the blog will know that we've enjoyed lots of afternoon tea adventures at The Ampersand, so we are so pleased to see other people enjoying the teas on offer there too. If you'd like to know more about the amazing pastry chef behind these fab creations take a peek at our meet the chef article!

A huge thank you to Victoria for another lovely post - we always love seeing your photos and can't wait for the next one! If you'd like to share your latest afternoon tea adventure with us we'd love to hear from you!

Time for a little Christmas Cheer....

Hello there,

Welcome back to another afternoon tea post from Tea With Me and Friends.....can you believe that we are only a month away from Christmas already? This year has flown by in a whirl of afternoon tea and tea bags!

Here at Tea With Me and Friends Towers we might be a little bit obsessed with Christmas (well OK, Rachel is probably much more obsessed than Lorna!), and we do love a well themed afternoon tea. So over the coming weeks we thought we would share with you some of the lovely Christmas afternoon teas that we have discovered.....

Let's start with a look at what super pastry chef Ji Sun Shin at the Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington, London has created.....

Christmas afternoon tea at Ampersand Hotel

This scrummy looking Christmas themed afternoon tea begins with Savoury gougeres filled with such delights as turkey & cranberry, Stilton & apple, smoked salmon & cream cheese and a sausage & pear roll.

This is followed by a warm selection of plain and white chocolate scones, served with Devonshire clotted cream and homemade strawberry preserve.

The sweet treats on offer at the Ampersand this Christmas

Finally it's time for the Christmassey pastries. The selection includes.....mince pies, short bread Christmas trees, mulled wine jelly shots and Dark chocolate mini entremets.

I do love a good mince pie and so its lovely to see this appear with the sweet selection. I also love that little moose on the macaroon.

Christmas afternoon tea at Ampersand Hotel

Time for a Spot of Winning Afternoon Tea

Hello there,

Welcome back to another guest post at Tea With Me and Friends. Do you remember in the summer Lorna and I celebrated the blog running for a year with a little competition? The Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington helped us celebrate by giving us an afternoon tea for two to give away. Lots of readers joined in the fun, but it was Lucy from Foodie Force who was the lucky winner.

Lucy recently enjoyed her afternoon tea prize.....let's see what she thought of her afternoon tea experience....

Two minutes from South Kensington station the Ampersand Hotel and The Drawing Rooms have been beautifully designed. The Drawing Room instantly put me at ease. It has a wonderful warm and homely interior with freshly baked goods on display (a FoodieForce paradise).

We opted for the traditional afternoon tea, which began with Tartines....

Highlights had to be the coronation chicken and smoked salmon. The coronation chicken had the right balance of creaminess and spice.

Service at the Ampersand Hotel is seriously relaxed, now this won't be to everyone's cup of tea (pardon the pun), but for me I personally found this refreshing. Where you are quietly allowed to enjoy the wonderful food and the company of friends without being rushed.

What followed have to be the best scones I have ever had. Now this is no exaggeration, this woman knows her scones and these were super light and wonderfully fluffy. With the addition of clotted cream and strawberry jam, all I could have wished for is that they were bigger.

The Ampersand definitely have their pâtisserie down to a fine art.

The lemon meringue tart, chocolate brownie and English breakfast tea bonbon were seriously delicious.

A wonderful afternoon tea. I very much look forward to visiting again in the future to stay in their superbly modern boutique hotel.

We'd like to thank Lucy for sharing her experience with us, to read the full blog post please visit Lucy's blog - Foodie Force. We're really pleased that Lucy enjoyed afternoon tea at the Ampersand as much as we do, her photos certainly made our mouth's water!

The traditional afternoon tea at the Ampersand costs £27.50 per person or £39.50 with a glass of Champagne. The Ampersand offers a range of different afternoon teas, including themed and vegetarian options. For more information please visit their website.

Time for a little spooky tea....Ampersand Hotel

Hello there,

Happy Halloween!

Welcome back to another afternoon tea post from Tea With Me and Friends. Last weekend, Lorna and I celebrated Halloween a little early with a visit to the Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington.

Now, if you've popped by our blog before you'll know this isn't our first time to the Ampersand. This is our third or fourth visit to the hotel for a spot of afternoon tea, in fact we first visited this lovely boutique hotel for Halloween afternoon tea in 2013. We love the work of pastry chef Ji Sun Shin and couldn't resist going back to sample the Halloween tea again.....

Halloween afternoon tea
Ampersand Hotel

Now, all the afternoon teas served at the Ampersand follow a similar format of savouries (either open sandwiches or savoury gougeres) followed by scrummy white chocolate scones - however it's the sweet top tier of the afternoon tea stand where Ji Sun lets her imagination and creativity run wild and that's where I want to focus this post.....

Sweet treats - afternoon tea - Ampersand Hotel

Although this tea looks like similar to the Halloween tea that was served last year, there are some subtle differences this year which we all enjoyed.

The sweet treats include a cute orange pumpkin cake, a blackberry jelly skull on a sable breton, a red velvet cupcake and a raspberry, rose & redcurrant blood shot.

I particularly enjoyed the jelly skull on the sable breton, the combination of the silky jelly on top of the sable breton was brilliant - especially if you chose to put the entire thing in your mouth in one go! The blackberry jelly has an amazing flavour too. Altogether a lovely treat!

You might have noticed this little cutie in the photo.....

I saved my orange pumpkin cake to last as it's so cute and I didn't want to cut it up straight away. Once you take the plunge and cut through the icing, you find a wonderful orange sponge cake inside - which is beautifully flavoured.

Slightly more alarming is the red velvet mini cake, complete with "glass" shard and eyeball....

The red velvet cake melts in the mouth, and is topped with a tangy drizzle of raspberry. Again it's the perfect size for popping into your mouth in one go if you are so inclined!

Each time we visit the Ampersand we are amazed by the cakes and pastries created by Ji Sun, she creates items that look so pleasing to the eye, yet she never compromises taste. I had the pleasure of meeting Ji Sun earlier this year when she kindly answered some of my nosey afternoon tea questions....take a peek at the post to read more about how she creates her amazing afternoon teas.

The Halloween afternoon tea costs £32.50 per person and is available until the 9th November 2014, to find out more visit the Ampersand website.

We opted to use a number generator to pick the winner from all the entries......

So who was our lucky winner.....

(Hmmmm...technology is failing me today!)

The winner is Lucy - congratulations!
Lucy left us the following comment....

I love the intricate biscuits in the shape of a musical instrument. My favourite thing about afternoon tea is that it is all about decadence. There is no rushing, you get to try new twists on a traditional afternoon tea. But best of all you get to eat the cakes first should you choose.

Lucy please can you contact me on teawithmeandfriends@gmail.com with your contact details and I will send you your voucher for tea! We hope that you enjoy your tea at The Ampersand and maybe share some photos with us afterwards!

We're looking forward to sharing another year of afternoon teas with everyone....and don't forget if you would like to feature as a guest blogger please get in touch!

Thanks for popping by today,

Time for Tea.....The Ampersand Chelsea Flower Show Tea

Hello there,

Welcome back to another brilliant guest post here at Tea With Me and Friends - this time we are joined by Jude and her husband who recently visited The Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington. As regular visitors to the blog will know, this is a favourite spot of mine for afternoon tea and I am always keen to hear about the amazing new teas that Pastry Chef Ji Sun Shin creates!

Jude visited The Drawing Room at the hotel for their rather special Chelsea Flower Show inspired afternoon tea. Now I know this tea is no longer available, but I wanted to share with you how beautiful it looked....

Afternoon tea at The Ampersand Hotel

The tea followed the usual format of a selection of savoury gougeres followed by white chocolate scones, which Jude found just as scrummy as me! But it was that top layer where it all got very creative and floral.....

Ampersand Hotel

Let's take a closer look at those sweet treats....

Afternoon tea at The Ampersand Hotel

In addition to the wonderful food on offer, Jude also commented on the surroundings of The Drawing Room at The Ampersand - particularly the comfy seats and relaxed ambiance of the lounge. All in all a wonderful experience!

You may have missed the highly creative Chelsea Flower Show afternoon tea....but fear not as Chef Ji Sun has some more wonderful afternoon teas up her sleeve over the coming months! As well as the traditional afternoon tea and vegetarian variety which are always on offer, the amazing science tea is making another appearance between 26th May and 20th June.

This has been one of my favourite afternoon teas at the hotel and features pastries including Hazelnut, walnut and chocolate cake with mango mousse volcano and chocolate dinosaur, Pistachio macaroon with cherry sauce pipette, Raspberry cake planet and a Citrus cocktail......
