The Friday Review - Natural Oolong, In Nature Tea

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends, we hope you're feeling tea-riffic today!

So, it's been rather a long time since we wrote a Friday review post showcasing a new tea that we've been enjoying....but fear not....we're back with a new tea for you to discover!

Today we're sharing with you a tea from In Nature teas - their Natural Oolong. In Nature teas is a family run company set up by the founder who moved from the UK to China, where he travelled and enjoyed some of the best teas in the world....which he wanted to share with tea lovers everywhere! In Nature work with small, family-run farms who use traditional methods to produce their teas.

For a small family run company, In Nature offer a great range of teas including three different Oolong teas. We had the pleasure of sampling their Natural Oolong tea which is known in Chinese as Nai Xiang-Jin Xuan, which translates as ‘fragrant milk’. Which is a great name for the sweet, creamy aroma of this tea.

 This tea is sourced in Taiwan and In Nature buy during Autumn when the leaves are best harvested. If you look closely at Oolong leaves, you'll see that they are twisted tightly....but watch them swell once they are added to water.

The leaves have a lovely fruity aroma to them, which hit you as soon as you open the packet.

To brew this tea, use one tablespoon of leaves per cup of tea you are making and allow the leaves to brew for just a minute or two to enjoy a light, refreshing brew. Your water should be boiling when making this tea, but beware of leaving it to brew too long - you don't want to ruin this delicate tea!

Once brewed you have a pretty peachy tea to enjoy....

The aroma was slightly less fruity once brewed, but it still smelt sweet and creamy. The flavour is light and refreshing, slightly fruity / floral - perfect for warmer weather. I really enjoyed this cuppa!

And just look at how much the leaves swelled with the water....

Friday Tea Review - adagio teas - part 2

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - we're here with another tea-riffic tea review for you! Last week we brought you two hot teas from the adagio teas range....this week we are sharing one of their iced teas!

With summer (hopefully) fast approaching us in the UK (we can wish can't we??) we're starting to think of the warmer months and summer drinks. Iced teas are hugely popular in America apparently accounting for approximately 85% of all tea consumed, and they are often served sweet. Iced tea is also a popular choice across Europe - but it doesn't seem to be as popular here in the UK. Cold brewing is becoming more popular however, with more people experimenting with iced teas. So when adagio teas offered me the opportunity to try one of their iced teas I jumped at the chance!

Adagio Teas makes their iced teas using tea leaves rather than powders, selling pre-measured "iced tea-bags" that you simply add to a jug of water and refrigerate overnight. The pouches are just like oversized tea bags and each one makes about a litre of iced tea.

And it is as simple to prepare as adding the pouch to water, putting the jug in the fridge and waiting overnight. However, if you want your tea sooner simply steep your pouch in hot water for five minutes and then add ice to cool - I think the overnight wait is worth it though!

There are currently 8 different iced teas in the adagio range, including a blood orange iced tea, a mango iced tea and a citron green iced tea. I was lucky enough to be sent the white peach iced tea - combining a delicate white tea with sweet peach flavours.

This tea was sweet and delicate - not at all artificial and the peach flavour was balanced just right. Much better than black peach ice teas that I have tried previously - I think the white tea matches the peach flavour really well. All I can say is roll on summertime!

The iced tea pouches cost £6 for 6 pouches, but you do get a litre of drink from each pouch. I would definitely like to try the other iced tea flavours in the range too.

Friday Tea Review - adagio teas

It's Friday and we've written a blog post....that can only mean one....yes the return of the Friday Tea Review! It's been a while since we posted a Friday review, but we've been busy tasting teas ready to share with you!

This week we are sharing some teas from adagio teas that we've recently been sent to try. Adagio teas are sourced directly from artisan growers, which means they'll reach you super fresh and full of flavour. Tea varieties in their range vary from traditional blends you know and love to something a little bit different - there is something for everyone within their range!

I've tried two rather unique teas to start my tea adventure with adagio teas - a white blueberry and an earl grey green....

Earl Grey Green - a twist on a traditional earl grey blend!

This is a blend of green tea, orange peels, natural bergamot flavour and blue cornflowers to produce a lighter version of a traditional earl grey. When brewed for 2-3 minutes you get a lovely pale yellow tea which has the aroma of bergamot.

The tea is light and refreshing - perfect for a sunny afternoon! The flavour isn't as intense as a traditional earl grey tea, but if you're happy with a slightly lighter tea then this is worth a try.

White Blueberry - a light, fragrant white tea blend!

This tea blends two of my favourite things - white tea and blueberries! I seriously cannot be controlled when there are blueberries about - there is something about the flavour that I just love and I can easily devour a punnet without realising! So when I saw this tea I knew I had to try it.

White Blueberry tea blends together flavour of blueberries with premium white tea from Fujian province, China. This tea can be enjoyed hot or cold - I opted for hot, brewing for tea for about three minutes.

The tea is very aromatic once brewed and a beautiful copper colour. The flavour is very light and delicate, the blueberries add a pleasant sweet taste. Not for anyone who likes a lot of flavour from their tea, but if you are looking for something light and refreshing this is a good tea to try.

I think it would make a really good cold brew tea as well - lovely in the summer months.

The Friday Review - Dragonfly Teas

It's Friday.....that means one thing at Tea With Me and Friends Towers....it's time for the Friday Review. This week we are featuring two teas from Dragonfly Tea who are celebrating 15 tea-riffic years!

To celebrate fifteen years of Dragonfly Tea, their new Tea House Collection brings to life all the passion, heritage and expertise for which Dragonfly Tea have become known. Their beautiful collection features 10 delicious artisan whole leaf teas, all sourced with care from the finest gardens around the world.

As you can see we tried the English Breakfast blend and the Bai Mudan White Tea.

Dragonfly Tea have created a ‘breakfast blend’ of exceptional quality, selecting teas from some of the world’s finest estates. For over 150 years, tea-makers have sought to compose the perfect accompaniment to the traditional English breakfast....and I have to say that Dragonfly Tea has done a wonderful job with this blend! It's a full bodied black tea, with slightly malty undertones. A really good cuppa to start the day!

The white tea comes from China’s mountainous Fujian Province. Known as ‘White Peony’, it is made from the delicate buds and most tender leaves of the Da Bai tea bush, favoured by the 11th century Song Emperors of China. Grown amongst the misty peaks, the leaves are gathered and dried in early spring and then lightly and skilfully cured using age-old techniques. This produces a lovely, light tea which has a slight nutty flavour. 

To celebrate these pretty teas I knew I needed one of my really pretty teacups....

The Friday Review - The Tea Route

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - we hope you're well today!

It's Friday....it's time to put the kettle on and try a new cup of tea! This time we are sampling some of the tea collection from The Tea Route.

Teas from The Tea Route

The Tea Route is a Greek tea business which offers tea lovers unique tea varieties and flavours - inspired by the diversity of Mediterranean nature. Their range includes Mediterranean herbs, fruits, flowers and fragrant spices blended with exquisitely scented teas. Chamomile, mountain tea, lavender, sage, rosemary, as well as cinnamon, Chios mastic, clove, figs, apricots, oranges, and richly scented blossoms including rose and jasmine are paired with black, green and white teas from the gardens of the Far East. 

We couldn't wait to try this intriguing range!

Let's start with something that was vaguely familiar.....a cup of Earl Grey Lord Byron...

This Chinese black tea is blended with intense bergamot flavour to create a warming and sweet cup of tea.

The leaves smell sweet, with a light citrus fragrance.....

When brewed you are rewarded with a cup of light brown tea, with a really pretty citrus aroma. It has a really mellow flavour, which will brighten a dull winter day.

Next for a tea which is more exotic....Palmyra....

This is another black tea, this time blended with dates, sultanas, sesame, almond, fig and vanilla. The leaves are very pretty, they smell like sweet nuts or popcorn. They made my mouth water!

Once brewed we had a lovely rich amber colour with a lovely popcorn aroma.

The flavour of this tea is quite surprising, it's light and very refreshing with a nutty, sweet taste. A really lovely cup of tea!

The Friday Review - Oteas

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - we hope you're having a tea-riffic day!

Ok....so it's not Friday (our lovely scheduling tool didn't fancy working!) but we are here with a new tea review for you!

A little while ago the lovely people from Oteas got in touch, asking whether we'd be interested in sampling some of their teas....and I'm sure you all know the answer we gave! Oteas is a UK based tea company who blend teas from around the world, including Sri Lanka. China and Japan.  Oteas have a desire to promote an active, healthy and balanced lifestyle and their teas come in seven different ranges including black, detox, fruit, green, herbal, organic and rooibos.

Oteas offer teas in both loose leaf form and also pyramid tea bag and they sent us the cutest individually boxed teas to try....take a look at these...

Each little box has a tea bag inside...perfect for creating tea adventures for yourself or if you're feeling generous a tea-loving friend!

In my first selection I had Yasumi tea, ginger tea and an English breakfast tea....

The English breakfast is a full-bodied blend of Ceylon tea and Assam teas, perfect for starting the day! The Yasumi tea is a mix of traditional green tea with notes of berry and mint. This tea is like summer in a cup - a pretty yellow colour when brewed and quite fruity in taste.

Finally we have the Ginger tea, which is a sweet, fruity tea - good for cheering you up on a grey day!

The second set of teas included a lemongrass, ginger and cinnamon tea, Oteas Pure tea and a vanilla flavoured Rooibos...

The malty rooibos has been combined with a splash of sweet vanilla to create a soothing blend, which can be enjoyed at anytime of the day. The lemongrass, ginger and cinnamon tea is smooth but spicy, a wonderfully warming cuppa!

Finally the wellness tea - pure...

Believe it or not this is a white tea! The colour comes from the beetroot pieces in the blend! The tea itself smells very fruity, but doesn't taste as fruity as it smells! Its another comforting cuppa, perfect for the autumn months. 

I loved the little individual boxes, which you can buy individually from the website. It allows you to try teas you might not normally pick and discover new favourites. The Oteas range has something for everyone!

The Friday Review - Grey's Teas Part 3 - The Assam edition

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - we hope you're enjoying Afternoon Tea Week 2016!

Today we bring you our third and final look at Grey's Teas, this time focusing on a selection of Assam Teas.

Let's start by taking a look at Assam Dikom....

Grey's Teas - Assam Dikom

The Dikom tea garden is based in the south-east of the Assam region in India’s north east, Dikom is considered one of Assam’s best tea estates. The tea produced is a bold, no nonsense traditional tea.

When brewed for five minutes you have a beautiful rich coloured tea with a bright, slightly malty flavour. A well rounded cuppa.....

Next we have the Assam Harmutty Second Flush.....

The Harmutty garden was established in 1870 and located in the Brahmaputra valley. The tea is usually picked in May, and has a wonderfully inviting aromatic aroma. 

A nice tea fact for you - this is a clonal tea....which means that the tea bushes which these leaves are picked from are cloned from the root-stock of the original tea plants native to Assam! 

This tea should be brewed for about four minutes and can be drunk with or without milk....we opted for without milk....

This tea when brewed is a lovely dark amber colour.

This is a lovely bold and rich tea with a slightly malty flavour. 

Finally we have the Assam Tonganagaon 2nd Flush....which also happens to be my favourite of the three....

This tea is produced by a small garden, from the Tinsukia district of Assam, in limited quantities, 

The tea is a golden amber colour when brewed for four minutes....

This tea has a bold flavour, which is malty but also slightly spicy...and its this delicious warmth that I love about it. A great cup of tea to start the day off with!

The Friday Review - Lemon & Orange Black Tea from Taylors of Harrogate

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - it's Friday....so it's time to share another cup of tea with you!

I travel with work quite a bit, staying overnight in various hotels. This has both its positives and negatives....one of the ups is that I get to try quite a few different teas on my travels! One of the first things I usually look for when I check into a new hotel is the tea tray (sad I know!), to see what delights there might be. Often it's a standard branded tea, nothing too exciting, but sometimes I discover something a little bit different. This was the case when I checked into my hotel in Darlington this week....the tea tray initially looked quite bog standard....

All the usual suspects were huddle together at the front....but tucked away near the back was something a bit more interesting....

Lemon and orange tea - Taylors of Harrogate

Yes, this is a lemon and orange tea....but its not a fruity tea...nope its a black tea. I was intrigued to try this one out. I was also impressed by the size of the mug -no tiny teacups at this hotel!

Taylors have combined black tea with the sweet, tangy flavour of citrus fruits for a tea that they say you can enjoy at any time of the day.

For the perfect cup they recommend that you use one tea bag. Add freshly boiled water and infuse for 3-5 minutes. The fruity flavour is best appreciated on its own, or can be sweetened with sugar or honey.

The flavour of the tea was lovely - zesty and refreshing. Not at all artificial or overpowering - you could taste that it was a black tea rather than a herbal infusion.

The Friday Review -Grey's Teas -Part 2

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends, we hope you're feeling tea-riffic today!

Last week we took at first look at Grey's Teas and the range they have on offer for tea lovers, today we're going to take a look at another selection of their teas.

First off let's take a look at "Good Afternoon" a Chinese and Indian tea blend......

This tea can be enjoyed with or without milk - as you'd expect, I enjoyed it without. Once brewed the tea is a pretty light amber colour - very welcoming....

The tea has a really light smokey aroma and flavour - not at all overpowering, but you can definitely pick up a slight smokey hint. Its a light and refreshing tea, which I thoroughly enjoyed with a piece of cake one afternoon!

Next lets take a look at Tian Mu Qing Ding a Chinese green tea.....

This is a green tea from China’s Zhejiang Province, which is grown high in the mists of the picturesque sub-tropical Tian Mu mountain. The tea is picked for only two weeks each spring.

To brew this tea, use one teaspoon per cup with freshly boiled water that has cooled to around 80 C. and infuse for three minutes......

This tea is a lovely pale golden colour when brewed, and has a light, smooth taste to it. Anyone who believes green tea is bitter should try this tea! There is even a hint of sweetness to the tea - again not overpowering in any way but definitely noticeable.

The Friday Review - Greys Teas

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - it's Friday....that means we're back with a new tea review for you!

Recently, Greys Teas kindly sent me a selection of their teas to try.....as well as the samples, I was sent some handy tasting note cards.....

Tea-riffic post from Grey's Teas

Grey's Teas specialise in teas from individual tea gardens or tea growing areas so that tea lovers can experience their diversity of character. The range of tea currently on offer features approximately 150 different teas from around the world. These teas comprise of  black, green, oolong, white, flavoured green and flavoured black teas plus herbal infusions - something for everyone!

Richard Grey, founder of Grey’s Teas has previously worked for Lyons, Tetley and Whittard. He has a particular interest in new product development and has an honours degree in marketing and a masters degree in product design. He has travelled extensively in India and China. 

Richard is descended from the First Earl Grey. It was the Second Earl Grey (British Prime Minister 1830-1834) who had today’s most popular tea named after him. Unsurprisingly, Grey's Teas stock an excellent Earl Grey, a traditional blend of China Keemun, Darjeeling and oil of Bergamot!

The first tea I sampled from Grey's Tea is the Ceylon Oodoowerre Silver Needle white tea.....

Silver Needle - Grey's Teas

This budset white tea is from the Ceylon Uva district of Sri Lanka, situated at an altitude of nearly 4000 ft. This is a rare tea, picked from only the right tea bushes in the Oodoowerre garden. These pale green-grey tips are large at over one inch long with a blackcurrant aroma to the dry leaf which is just dried on blankets in the sun.

To enjoy a cup of this tea, you need to infuse three grams of leaves per cup, for four minutes.

Once brewed the tea is a pretty amber colour.....

The taste is very smooth, with an ever so slightly nutty flavour. 

I thoroughly enjoyed this cuppa!

The Friday Review - Bluebird Tea, the Summer Collection 2016

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends! We've been a little quiet on the blog recently, but never fear...we're back with lots more tea and cake!

Today we have a lovely summer tea review for you....fitting with the beautiful summer weather we're having in the UK (hmmmm...this is a bit of a fib...it's currently very wet in Surrey!!).

Bluebird Tea - Red Velvet & Jelly & Ice Cream

Yes, you've read that correctly....part of the Bluebird Tea Summer collection is Jelly & Ice Cream! The whole range includes Jelly & Ice Cream, Sangria, Strawberry Split and Red Velvet - perfect for the summer months! I was lucky enough to be sent the red velvet and jelly & ice cream teas to try!

Let's start with the red velvet tea....

Bluebird Tea - Red Velvet

This tea combines Sri Lankan black tea, cocoa shells, white chocolate sprinkles, beetroot slices (yes beetroot slices) and pomegranate flowers. The blend is very pretty with flecks of white, red and yellow mingled with the dark tea leaves and cocoa shells. It smells amazing....just like cake!

Bluebird Tea - Red Velvet

Add your boiling water and you get a very attractive, ruby red tea which has a chocolate aroma. This tea can be enjoyed with or without milk....not surprisingly I opted for no milk.

The tea has a rich, bold flavour....again very reminiscent of a slice of cake. It's a warm, soothing tea, which would satisfy a sweet tooth without being overly sweet. It's an authentic flavour, not at all artificial. A lovely cuppa!

The second tea is a rooibos blend called Jelly & Ice Cream....

This blend includes rooibos, vanilla, strawberries and elderberries.....and really smells like strawberries and cream when you open the packet! The aroma made my mouth water and made me smile....surely a sign of a great beverage!

This blend can be enjoyed hot or cold - on this occasion I opted for hot. The tea is a pretty amber colour when brewed and smells just like strawberries! It's a really fun tea, which reminds me very much of jelly and ice-cream. The flavours are strawberry and vanilla, with creamy hints. 

I can't wait to try this as a cold drink!

The Friday Review - French Earl Grey - T2

Welcome back to Tea With Me and Friends - its been a while since we featured a new tea on the blog....but this week I enjoyed a lovely cup from T2 that I'd like to share with you.

This week I have been enjoying French Earl Grey tea from T2 - thanks to Lorna for the tea-riffic recommendation and the lovely T2 lady for letting me have a sample of the tea!

French Earl Grey - T2

In this tea the traditional Earl Grey gets a French fruity twist! This medium-bodied black tea base is full of fruity notes that play with the classic bergamot flavours in an uplifting cuppa. The ingredients for this flavoured black tea include...... black tea, flavouring, hibiscus, sunflower petals, rose petals, mallow flowers

I sampled this tea in teabag form....

French Earl Grey - T2

The teabag itself is rather luxious.....as its a handcrafted cotton teabag that encases your tea leaves and other ingredients. The needs to be brewed for just a couple of minutes to give you an amber coloured cup of tea....

French Earl Grey - T2

I found this tea to be very refreshing, a bit fruity, a bit floral....a bit citrus - perfect with a piece of cake or biscuit! A very enjoyable cuppa in the afternoon.

The Friday Review....Gyokuro from T2

Happy Friday! We hope you're well today!

Last week Lorna and I happened to pop into the T2 Tea store on Regent Street and spent a rather lovely time talking to one of the assistants in there. If you're not familiar with the T2 Tea brand, they are an Australian tea company who now have over 70 stores in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.  They are Australia’s leading tea retailer, offering the country’s largest range of premium, fragrant tea and tea wares from all around the globe.

As we looked around the gorgeous tea and teaware displays, the assistant told us about her favourite tea - Gyokuro which is a green tea. This tea can be brewed twice and you can even eat the leaves once you've made your cuppa!

T2 Tea Gyokuro Green Tea

Gyokuro is a highly prized Japanese green tea. The tea bushes are shaded to encourage a heightened level of chlorophyll. The emerald green leaves yield a refined brew with what T2 Tea describe as a sweet lingering flavour. This however, is an expensive tea...are you ready for this....it costs £24.00 for 100g.

I decided despite the expense that I needed to give this tea a go (it was pay day so I decided to treat myself!).....

T2 Tea Gyokuro Green Tea

The dry leaves are a pretty green colour, and I noted they were very fine. For this tea it is recommended that you use 1 tsp of leaves per 250mls of water, the leaves should be brewed for 1-3 minutes at 80°C (176°F). 

The tea once brewed is a little yellow colour...

T2 Tea Gyokuro Green Tea

The flavour is light, with a slight nuttiness to it. It's a very refreshing cup of tea, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I didn't eat the leaves this time, but I did brew them more than once giving me better value for money.

Was it worth the £24 price tag I hear you cry? Well, it was probably one of the best green teas that I have enjoyed at home.

I also might have treated myself to some new teaware while I was there too.....shhh...don't tell my bank manager!! It was far too pretty to leave in the shop though!
